Many language learners struggle with speaking like a native. Here are 20 Taiwanese Mandarin phrases that will make you sound like a native speaker immediately—impress your Taiwanese friends!

  1. 不好意思󠇢 (bù hǎo yì si) – excuse me

「不好意思󠇢,請問廁所在哪裡?」(bù hǎo yì si, qǐng wèn cè suǒ zài nǎ lǐ?) – excuse me, where is the restroom please?

People in Taiwan say this before almost every question or request in informal settings. It is a part of Taiwanese culture to use this phrase!

2. 我跟你說 (wǒ gēn nǐ shuō) – listen; let me tell you

「我跟你說,你一定要去台灣」(wǒ gēn nǐ shuō, nǐ yí ding yào qù tái wān) – Listen, you have to go to Taiwan

This phrase is often used to make or reinforce a point.

3. 真的假的?(zhēn de jiǎ de) – really? Seriously?

A:我買了這件衣服,花了一󠇡萬塊。(wǒ mǎi le zhè jiàn yī fú huā le yí wàn kuài) I spent 10,000 on this shirt.

B:真的假的?(zhēn de jiǎ de) – Seriously?

Used to express disbelief, often said with a surprised tone

4. 機車 (jī chē) – (informal, adjective) a difficult person who is hard to deal with; an annoying person

「這個󠇡新老師很機車,常常給學生一󠇢堆作業。」(zhè ge xīn lǎo shī hěn jī chē, cháng cháng gěi xué shēng yì duī zuò yè) – This new teacher is so annoying! She always gives students a ton of homework

Informally used between friends, if directed toward a friend, it is often said lightheartedly, not intending to harm

A:我加薪了!(wǒ jiā xīn le) – I got a raise!

Very informal, used between friends, often with a cheerful tone

6. 好喔 (hǎo ō) – sure! OK!

A:可以傳昨天的照片給我嗎?(kě yǐ chuán zuó tiān de zhào piàn gěi wǒ ma) – Can you send me yesterday’s pictures?

B:好喔!(hǎo ō) – sure!

Can be used to lighten up the mood, or sound less direct and monotone when casually speaking to friends

7. 有事嗎? (yǒu shì ma) – what’s wrong with you/him/her?

「那個󠇡新管理員的態度超差,有事嗎?」(nà ge xīn guǎn lǐ yuán de tài dù chāo chā, yǒu shì ma) – the new building administrator’s attitude is terrible, what’s wrong with him?

8. 屁啦! (pì la) – no way! Bullshit!

A:我學中文才學六個月。(wǒ xué zhōng wén cái xué liù ge yuè) – I’ve only been studying Chinese for 6 months

B:屁啦!你中文說得󠇡超好!(pì la! nǐ zhōng wén shuō de chāo hǎo) – no way! Your Chinese is awesome!

This phrase is very informal and should only be said between close friends

9. 誇張 (kuā zhāng) – ridiculous; unbelievable; nonsense

A:我發燒了,可是我的老闆不󠇡讓我請病假󠇡。(wǒ fā shāo le, kě shì wǒ de lǎo bǎn bú ràng wǒ qǐng bìng jià) – I have a fever, but my boss won’t let me take a sick leave

B:誇張!怎麼可以這樣!(kuā zhāng! zěn me kě yǐ zhè yàng) – ridiculous! How is that possible?

10. 傻眼 (shǎ yǎn) – facepalm

Similar to 誇張, this phrase can be used in response to something unbelievable or ridiculous

A:今天是禮拜三嗎?(jīn tiān shì lǐ bài sān ma) – Is today Wednesday?

This phrase can make your tone friendlier, and is a great alternative to textbook ‘yes’ phrases

13. 好康 (hǎo kāng) – (informal) benefits (discounts, free samples, etc.) received as a customer

「會員好康」(huì yuán hǎo kāng) – membership benefits

This term is often found in posters, advertisements, heard or seen on television, meanwhile not often used in conversation

14. 安啦 (ān la) – don’t worry

「安啦,不要擔心」(ān la, bú yào dān xīn) – calm down, don’t worry!

15. 都可以,沒差 (dōu kě yǐ, méi chā)

– it’s fine, I don’t mind

A:我下個󠇡星期六不能跟你出去,可以改這個󠇡星期六嗎?(wǒ xià ge xīng qí liù bù néng gēn nǐ chū qù, kě yǐ gǎi zhè ge xīng qí liù ma) – I can’t go out with you next Saturday. Can we reschedule for this Saturday?

B:都可以,沒差 (dōu kě yǐ, méi chā) – it’s fine, I don’t mind

16. 蛤󠇡 (há) – sorry?; what?

This phrase can be used in two ways: for when you need a person to repeat something they said, or as a reaction to a bad surprise

「蛤󠇡,可以再說一󠇡遍嗎?」(há, kě yǐ zài shuō yí biàn ma) – what? Can you say that again?

「蛤󠇡,為󠇡什麼?」(há, wèi shén me) – what? Why?

17. 好(adj.)(喔) (hǎo ō) – so (adj.)!

「好可愛(喔)!」(hǎo kě ài ō) – so cute!

「喔」 can make this sentence structure sound more feminine. If you want to sound more masculine, you can drop it

18. 好浪漫(喔) (hǎo làng màn ō) – so romantic!

19. 好厲害(喔) (hǎo lì hài ō) – so awesome!

20. 好好吃(喔) (hǎo hǎo chī ō) – so delicious!
